About Total Body Fitness

The owners and partners in Total Body Fitness, Bill Driskill and Mark Shaw have been best friends for over 25 years. Company founder Bill recruited his friend Mark for a two-person multi-sport event in 1986: the River of No Return Pentathlon and their life-long passion for training and racing was born. Throughout the 80's they raced the Bud Light USTS races and followed every move of the ‘Big Four' in racing and training - Bill arrived an hour early to line up outside a bike shop in San Jose one morning to get Dave Scott's autograph on his new training book, and turned out to be the only person showing up. Their passion for triathlon fueled the start of the company.

In 1991 Bill founded Total Body Fitness, and watched it quickly become Sacramento's Premier Personal Training Company, offering in-home personal training. In 1992 Total Body Fitness became the training company for the Leukemia Society of America's Team In Training Program. With Mark joining the company a year later, TBF helped the Northern California Chapter of Team in Training become a leader and example for the national program. They trained hundreds of marathon runners to compete at the Honolulu, Anchorage, Catalina, Humboldt, San Francisco, Big Sur, and CIM marathons. This led to Total Body Fitness's first international Travel package: the Paris Marathon in 1999 and 2000, to which they took 56 runners for two-weeks of fun and adventure. It also was the beginning of TBF Training.

In 1996 Total Body Fitness departed from the Leukemia Society's national program and started a local marathon and triathlon training program with the same ‘class' format they had developed for Team in Training. Their spring triathlon class trained for and competed in the Wildflower Triathlon Festival, taking 5th place in the Team Competition three years in a row. The spring triathlon class was soon supplemented with a summer class and within two years TBF Training grew into the largest triathlon training program in California. In 2000 mountain biking classes replaced their marathon classes, and with the addition of an IRON class for serious triathletes, individual swim coaching and Track Attack for running workouts, they now offer a full line of multi-sport training options.

Along with the Triathlon training, Total Body Fitness decided to offer a sprint triathlon event, both for their class and also for the triathletes of Northern California. In September of 1998 the first Granite Bay Triathlon was held. The next year the Granite Bay Duathlon was added in the spring, along with the creation of the Chanoko Duathlon Series and the new company was called TBF Racing. Each year TBF Racing has improved and expanded their race offerings, adding more triathlons, duathlons, trail runs and mountain bike races including the TRI for FUN Series, the CLIF Bar Team Challenge Triathlon, and the NEW LUNA all Women's Triathlon.

Meanwhile, after their trip to Paris in 2000, Total Body Fitness offered a fall trip to Thailand to compete in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. Of the 26 travelers on the trip only one did the race, but everyone loved Thailand, especially Bill, who met his wife Worawan on the island of Ko Lanta. Their trips to Thailand became more popular each year and now TBF Travel offers six separate travel packages per year.
